What "1st print manga" means here

A first print manga (1st print) is a copy from the very first print run a publisher released for that volume: the original artifact, before any reissue, reprint, or special-edition reskin. For Japanese tankōbon, that's confirmed on the colophon page (only the original release date listed, no reprint entries). For English manga, it's confirmed by the printer's number line in the indicia starting at "1". Once a publisher prints a second run, the first print supply is fixed forever, which is exactly why investment-grade collectors target this category.

Japanese vs English first print manga

The two language catalogs trade on different forces. Japanese 1st print manga from Shueisha and Kodansha are the canonical originals: smaller initial runs, earlier release dates, and the version every series' original audience read. Print runs are decided in advance based on demand projections, and once that initial run is gone, every subsequent copy is a later printing, usually with different paper, ink, obi design, or even page count. For collectors, the 1st print is the original physical artifact and almost always the most valuable.

  • How can I tell if my manga is a first print?

    The fastest tells are the colophon page (last page in Japanese tankōbon) and the obi (paper banner). Japanese manga lists the print number and date on the colophon. A 1st print shows only the original release date with no reprint entries.   • Are Japanese 1st print manga worth more than English?

    Generally yes, for two reasons. First, Japanese is the original language. Collectors treat the Shueisha, Kodansha, or Shogakukan release as the canonical 1st print, while English editions are licensed translations that came out years later. Second, the Japanese 1st print run is the smaller of the two for most series because the original audience was domestic. Demon Slayer Vol. 1, Naruto Vol. 1, and One Piece Vol. 1 are textbook examples. The Japanese 1st prints trade at a multiple of the English 1st prints in equivalent grade.
