Graded Japanese Manga

44 products

Graded Japanese manga for sale: Japanese edition first prints only. These are the original tankōbon volumes printed in Japan by Shueisha, Kodansha and Shogakukan, slabbed by Beckett (BGS) with a permanent cert number. This shelf is the Japanese printing slice of our wider graded manga catalog, built for collectors who want the εˆη‰ˆ (shohan) itself rather than a later printing or a translated edition.

What makes a Japanese first print

A Japanese tankōbon records its printing on the colophon (ε₯₯付, okuzuke) at the back of the book. A first print reads εˆη‰ˆη¬¬1刷 (first edition, first printing); every later run adds a new printing number. Every slab on this shelf is a 1st printing, and the photos show the slab label so you can match the volume and grade before you buy.

The obi and why it matters

Japanese volumes come with an obi, the paper band wrapped around the lower cover with the publisher's promo copy. An original first print obi is fragile and often lost, so a slab that keeps it is scarcer than the same volume without one. Listings with an obi carry the Obi tag; use the Obi filter above to see only those.

Keys collectors chase

Japanese first prints of One Piece, Naruto, Berserk, Dragon Ball, Demon Slayer and Bleach lead the market, Vol. 1 above all. A BGS 9.4 Japanese first print of One Piece Vol. 1 trades well above the same book in BGS 8.5, and above either grade in English. For real sold prices rather than asking prices, our live manga price tracker collects BGS, CGC and CBCS sales from eBay, PWCC and major auction houses.

Cert lookup

Every listing shows the BGS cert number in the photos, so you can check the slab on Beckett's own lookup before you buy. We only list slabs from established graders, never private label "graded" cases.

Graded manga, frequently asked questions

  • What is graded manga?

Graded manga is a professionally inspected, sealed, and rated manga volume, slabbed in a tamper-evident acrylic case by Beckett (BGS). The grading company assigns a numeric grade from 1.0 to 10.0 based on the book's condition (corners, spine, page quality, surface, and overall preservation), authenticates the print run, and seals the book inside a protective holder forever. Graded slabs are the standard for serious manga collectors because the grade is independently verified and the book is protected from any further wear.

  • Is graded manga worth more than raw manga?

For key issues and high-grade copies, yes, sometimes by 5 to 10 times. A Japanese One Piece Vol. 1 1st print in BGS 9.4 can trade for multiples of the raw equivalent, because the grade certifies the condition is genuinely top-tier (not just "looks new"). For mid-series volumes, common condition tiers, or books worth under about $100 raw, grading costs more than it adds. The rule of thumb: grading is worth it when (a) the book is a key issue, and (b) a half-grade swing changes the market price by $100 or more. See our breakdown at why grade your manga.

  • Who grades manga right now?

BGS (Beckett Grading Services) is the only third-party grader actively running an at-scale manga grading program today. CGC is the long-established standard for American comics, and CBCS is the smaller of the legacy comic graders, but for manga specifically the entire serious collector market trades in BGS slabs. That is where the buyer pool, the population data, and the price discovery all sit. If you are buying or submitting in 2026, BGS is the practical answer.

  • Where can I see real graded manga prices?

West Blue runs a live manga price tracker that aggregates BGS-graded manga sold prices from eBay, PWCC, and major auction houses. You can filter by series, volume, and grade to see what a specific slab is actually trading for today rather than guessing from list prices. Updated daily.

  • How do I buy authentic graded manga online?

Stick to verified collectibles sellers that disclose the cert number, show the BGS label clearly in the photos, and ship in protective packaging. Every graded manga listing at West Blue Collectibles includes the slab cert number so you can verify it directly on Beckett's lookup. Avoid "graded" listings from unbranded marketplace sellers where the case looks generic or the cert number isn't shown, because counterfeit slabs do exist, especially for high-value One Piece, Naruto, and Demon Slayer keys.
